Description
These classic scones are light, fluffy, and perfect for breakfast or tea time. Serve them warm with clotted cream and jam for a delightful treat.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup (50g) granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup (115g) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 1/2 cup (120ml) whole milk
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Optional: 1 cup (150g) dried fruit (like raisins or cranberries) or chocolate chips
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- Add the cold, cubed butter to the flour mixture. Using your fingers or a pastry cutter, work the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, and vanilla extract.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. If using, fold in the dried fruit or chocolate chips.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently just until it comes together. Pat it into a circle about 1 inch thick.
- Cut the dough into wedges or use a round cutter to make individual scones. Place them on the prepared baking sheet.
- Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the scones are golden brown.
- Serve warm with clotted cream and jam.
Notes
- For extra flavor, consider adding lemon zest or almond extract to the dough.
- These scones can be frozen before baking. Just bake them straight from the freezer, adding a couple of extra minutes to the baking time.
