Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
- ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup whole milk
- 3 large eggs
- 2 ½ teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon almond extract
- ½ teaspoon salt
- Buttercream frosting (for decoration)
- Food coloring (optional, for aesthetics)
- Graduation-themed cake toppers
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla and almond extracts.
- In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the milk, starting and ending with the flour mixture. Mix until just combined.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans and smooth the tops.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
- Once cooled, frost the cakes with buttercream frosting. You can tint the frosting with food coloring to match your graduation theme.
- Decorate with graduation-themed cake toppers and any additional decorative elements.
Notes
- For a more flavorful cake, consider adding lemon or orange zest to the batter.
- You can also add layers of filling between the cake layers, such as fruit preserves or whipped cream.
- Make sure to let the cakes cool completely before frosting to avoid melting the buttercream.
