Ingredients
Scale
- 4 pounds pork shoulder (also known as pork butt)
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons paprika
- 1 tablespoon garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon onion powder
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional for heat)
- 1 cup BBQ sauce (store-bought or homemade)
- Buns for serving (optional)
- Coleslaw for serving (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C).
- In a small bowl, combine brown sugar, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper. Mix well.
- Rub the spice mixture all over the pork shoulder, ensuring it’s evenly coated.
- Place the pork shoulder in a roasting pan or a large Dutch oven. Cover tightly with foil or a lid.
- Cook in the preheated oven for about 4 to 5 hours, or until the meat is fork-tender and easily pulls apart.
- Remove the pork from the oven and let it rest for 20 minutes. Then, shred the pork using two forks.
- Mix in the BBQ sauce until the pork is well coated.
- Serve on buns with coleslaw if desired.
Notes
- For added flavor, marinate the pork overnight in the spice rub.
- You can also cook the pork shoulder in a slow cooker on low for 8 hours.
- Leftover pork can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
