Description
This classic baked beans recipe is hearty and flavorful, perfect as a side dish for barbecues or a comforting main course.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups dried navy beans
- 4 cups water
- 1/2 pound bacon, chopped
- 1 onion, diced
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons molasses
- 1 tablespoon mustard
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 2 cups chicken broth
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 325°F (165°C).
- In a large pot, combine the dried navy beans and water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes. Remove from heat and let beans soak for 1 hour. Drain and set aside.
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the chopped bacon until crispy. Remove bacon and drain on paper towels, leaving the drippings in the skillet.
- Add the diced onion to the skillet and sauté until softened, about 5 minutes.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the soaked beans, bacon, sautéed onion, brown sugar, ketchup, molasses, mustard, salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper, and chicken broth. Stir until well combined.
- Transfer the mixture to a large baking dish. Cover with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 2 hours.
- After 2 hours, remove the foil and bake for an additional 30 minutes, until the beans are tender and the sauce is thickened.
- Let cool slightly before serving. Enjoy your classic baked beans!
Notes
- For a vegetarian version, you can omit the bacon and use vegetable broth instead of chicken broth.
- Feel free to add diced bell peppers or garlic for extra flavor.
- These baked beans can be made ahead of time and reheated for convenience.
