  • Author: ushinzomr

Description

This classic baked beans recipe is hearty and flavorful, perfect as a side dish for barbecues or a comforting main course.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups dried navy beans
  • 4 cups water
  • 1/2 pound bacon, chopped
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons molasses
  • 1 tablespoon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 2 cups chicken broth

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 325°F (165°C).
  2. In a large pot, combine the dried navy beans and water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes. Remove from heat and let beans soak for 1 hour. Drain and set aside.
  3. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the chopped bacon until crispy. Remove bacon and drain on paper towels, leaving the drippings in the skillet.
  4. Add the diced onion to the skillet and sauté until softened, about 5 minutes.
  5. In a large mixing bowl, combine the soaked beans, bacon, sautéed onion, brown sugar, ketchup, molasses, mustard, salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper, and chicken broth. Stir until well combined.
  6. Transfer the mixture to a large baking dish. Cover with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 2 hours.
  7. After 2 hours, remove the foil and bake for an additional 30 minutes, until the beans are tender and the sauce is thickened.
  8. Let cool slightly before serving. Enjoy your classic baked beans!

Notes

  • For a vegetarian version, you can omit the bacon and use vegetable broth instead of chicken broth.
  • Feel free to add diced bell peppers or garlic for extra flavor.
  • These baked beans can be made ahead of time and reheated for convenience.
