Description

Hot cross buns are sweet, spiced buns marked with a cross on top, traditionally eaten during Easter.


Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons mixed spice powder
  • 1/2 cup currants
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 2 eggs
  • For the glaze: 1/4 cup apricot jam

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine flour, sugar, yeast, salt, and mixed spice powder.
  2. In a saucepan, heat milk and butter until warm.
  3. Add the warm milk mixture to the dry ingredients.
  4. Incorporate eggs and mix until a dough forms.
  5. Knead the dough for 10 minutes.
  6. Add currants and raisins, knead until well distributed.
  7. Let the dough rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  8. Punch down the dough and divide it into equal pieces.
  9. Shape each piece into a bun and place on a baking tray.
  10. Let rise again for 30 minutes.
  11. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  12. Make a cross on each bun with a knife.
  13. Bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown.
  14. Heat apricot jam and brush over the warm buns.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, add orange zest.
  • Store buns in an airtight container.
